“I am NOT the 99%, and whether or not you are is YOUR decision.”
I cannot tell you how much this statement infuriates me. It makes my blood boil.
Why?
Because it is so dangerously ignorant and short-sighted. This young woman (based on the handwriting..) is lucky, yes. Very lucky. Countless Americans haven’t been so lucky.
Her “barely above minimum wage” job is great— but what if she’s laid off tomorrow? What if she lives in an area like Northwest Alabama? Jobs here are scarce.
The assumption that the disenfranchised and underprivileged in America are in that position because of greed, work ethic and entitlement is irresponsible and ignorant to the facts.
We get it. You’ve worked hard and you have certainly caught some breaks. But there are millions and millions of Americans that have done the same and caught the short end of the stick over and over again. Their predicament has been exasperated by the mismanagement and greed of many corporations in this country. Where did those jobs go? Where did that wage go? These are serious questions that need answers— instead of answers, those corporations got bailed out by the government.
The bottom line is this— the behavior of the “haves” and the government in America will dictate the future viability of this country as a superpower. It will dictate the opportunities that you and I have access to. It will determine a GREAT deal about the course of this country and it’s eventual fate.
Not everyone catches every break. Just because you have worked hard, prospered and caught a little luck doesn’t mean the rest of America are a bunch of ignorant, lazy whiners. If you choose to think that way, you are no better than the people who got us in this mess in the first place.
These are the same type of idiots that want to “export the illegals” and “kill Obamacare” and all that. It’s a narrow, short-sighted view of our country.
To the person who wrote this note, good luck. I sincerely hope that you don’t a) lose your job, b) graduate to find no work, c) have to endure tuition hikes by your school, d) have a serious accident or crisis or e) let up on this incredible streak you are on. Congratulations on your success in life. Don’t get so caught up in your world that you forget others in the same world. Every positive has a negative. Every up has a down.
Work on some fucking humility and open your eyes.

Parks and Recreation is the show I would spend five years courting and then propose and then marry and then take on a honeymoon around the world and raise/adopt several children and both pursue and support each other through our own careers and/or lack of careers and then sit on the…
